Tempo Scaduto is an interactive audiovisual installation that borrows its operating mode from arcade shooting games. Interaction is built around three simple gestures: aiming, cocking, and firing at the scenes depicted and the characters within them. This archaic set of movements taps into primary behaviors inherent to every individual: the recognition and execution of prey. This initial level of participation, playful at first glance, serves to explore video content inspired by documentary facts—specifically the context of the Sicilian Mafia wars of the 1980s. The brutality of the gesture (shooting at an innocent target), combined with its absurd banality, allows the viewer to access the narrative content of the work.
Vincent Ciciliato is a French multimedia artist and associate professor of digital arts at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Étienne.
