CONTEXT

Faced with the environmental emergency and having become deeply committed to its digital transition since the health crisis, the industrial and cultural sector, in all its breadth, aims to address the major challenge of aligning digital technology with the ecological transition.

A digital strategy focused on the environment has thus been introduced into the creative industries sector and artistic practices, giving rise to a duality between the environmental benefits of its use and its own impact. While digital technology can serve as a tool and a response to the ecological transition (dematerialization, resource sharing, simplification), its impact remains significant. The growth of its usage and its consequences (extractivism, pollution, environmental damage, electronic waste, CO2 emissions, etc.) must be put into perspective regarding the resources it consumes in order to move toward digital sobriety.

In this context, how can we support the initiatives of those actors (artists, organizations, companies) who are developing or experimenting with more sustainable digital projects? What cultural policies, both at the regional and national levels, can be envisioned to support the development of responsible digital practices among artists, cultural organizations, and businesses?

As part of the ZERO1 Festival, a festival of hybrid arts and digital cultures, a professional day will be dedicated to this theme, offering an opportunity to examine the intersection of these issues. It will bring together representatives from the DRAC and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the La Rochelle Urban Community, and the HACNUM network—the national network for hybrid arts and digital cultures—for round-table discussions and debates.
