"Distances" is an interactive work that virtually brings together people who are unable to touch physically. This piece was created in April 2020 in response to the coronavirus crisis, which forced us into isolation and physical distancing from others.
In this installation, two people in separate physical spaces are filmed in real time by two devices. They are invited to connect virtually within a single image that brings them face-to-face. The one-on-one interaction facilitated by the software constantly strives to minimize the proxemic distance between the two individuals. Images of their faces and hands attract and repel one another, creating unique, fleeting moments of connection.
This work is participatory in its creative process. The two visitors interacting at any given time become the temporary performers of a scene. This scene is constantly renewed for other groups of observers present in the exhibition space. The creation elicits reactions and gestures from spectators in response to these virtual contacts.
