"Distances" is an interactive work that virtually brings together people who are unable to touch physically. This piece was created in April 2020 in response to the coronavirus crisis, which forced us into isolation and physical distancing from one another.

In this installation, two people in two separate physical spaces are filmed in real time by two devices. They are invited to connect virtually within a single image that brings them face-to-face. The one-on-one experience provided by the software constantly strives to minimize the proxemic distance between the two individuals. The images of their faces and hands attract and repel each other, creating unique, fleeting moments of encounter with the other person.

This work is participatory in its creative process. The two visitors interacting at any given time become the temporary performers of a scene. This scene is then constantly renewed for other groups of observing visitors present in the exhibition space. This creation elicits reactions and gestures from the spectators in response to these virtual contacts.
